the game of love and death martha brockenbroughThe Kirkus Prize announced its shortlist for YA books. The young adult nominees are The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough and Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older.

In The Game of Love and Death, Love and Death have chosen their players, set the rules, rolled the dice, and kept close, ready to influence, angling for supremacy. And Death has always won. But when human beings make moves of their own, what happens next is anyone’s guess.

In Shadowshaper, Sierra Santiago is enjoying her summer until a corpse crashes the party of the season. Sierra discovers she has the power to put the souls of the departed into her art.

Any title published between the first day of November 2014 and the last day of October 2015 that earned a starred review from Kirkus were automatically nominated. Winners will be announced on October 15 at a ceremony in Austin, TX.
