WNDB partners with YA Runs a 5k to create new grant

YA Runs a 5k has partnered with charity organization We Need Diverse Books to create the BJ Joseph Grant. Run by We Need Diverse Books, the grant will assist We Need Diverse Books in their mission to address the lack of diverse, non-majority narratives in children’s literature.

While almost everybody in the YA world knows about We Need Diverse Books – an official charity and campaign that began as a grassroots organization – YA Runs a 5k is a little less known. They are a campaign that focuses on promoting diverse reading and healthy living.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to create a grant for [We Need Diverse Books] and to do so in my late grandmother’s name, as she was a writer and greatly influenced my love for reading and the arts,” said YA Runs a 5k co-creator Melody Simpson in a press release. “It is my hope that her name can be a part of a campaign that continues to do that and impact young readers like me all over the nation.”

The grant is currently fundraising on GoFundMe.
