“Shadowhunters” earns second season on Freeform

“Shadowhunters,” the new television adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, earned a second season on Freeform (formerly ABC Family).

The adaptation began at the start of City of Bones, the first book in the Mortal Instruments series. Clary Fray’s mother is kidnapped, forcing Fray into the dangerous world of the Shadowhunters. Though there have been a few adjustments to character personalities and plot structure – Luke Garroway is a police officer rather than a detective; Clary Fray was aged up to 18 to justify the casting of Kat McNamara; subplots involving Magnus and Simon moved at a faster speed – the overall show maintains the fun and dramatic plots of the book while updating it for television in a delightful way.

The cast includes includes Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Emereaude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis, Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood and Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway.

The first season ends on April 15.
