Laurie Halse Anderson organizes #Speak4RAINN15

In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month and the 15th anniversary of Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group are joining with RAINN to help raise money for the organization.

The campaign, called #Speak4RAINN15, offers rewards to those who donate including signed posters, signed books, Skype chats with the author, and the chance to have your likeness appear in the upcoming graphic novel of SpeakThe rewards start at $25, though any donation is accepted. Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group pledged to match donations up to $15,000. The goal is to raise at least $30,000 by the end of April.

According to RAINN, every $10 helps one survivor through its National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE).

Speak tells the story of Melinda Sordino, a high school freshman, as she recovers from sexual assault. Laurie Halse Anderson spent the 15 years since the book was first published in 1999 raising awareness of sexual assault to help others like Melinda.

Donations can either be made through, or through the mail.

There’s also a chance for bookstores to raise money for the campaign. The store that raises that most money in April will win a visit from Laurie Halse Anderson.
