World Book Day UK announced on September 13th that Maureen Johnson has penned a short story written exclusively for World Book Day UK 2014. The novella, titled The Boy in the Smoke, is a prequel to Johnson’s Shades of London series.
The Shades of London series follows Louisiana-born Rory Deveaux, who enrolls in a London boarding school on the day of a brutal murder mimicking the killing spree of Jack the Ripper. Ripper-mania spreads throughout London as the attacks continue, but Rory soon discovers that she is one of very few people who can see the true killer. The prequel, The Boy in the Smoke, will tell the backstory of side-character and Shades leader Stephen Dene.
The prequel, published by Hot Key Books, will be available for purchase for £1/€1.50, or for free in exchange for a World Book Day Token in the UK and Ireland from March 3rd – 30th 2014, in celebration of World Book Day on March 6th.
