San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) is a yearly multi-genre entertainment and comic convention which takes place each summer at the San Diego Convention Center. While countless fans attended SDCC this past week, two cosplay fans in particular stood out.

Cosplay, a combination of the words costume and play, is an incredibly popular form of art where fans dress as their favorite characters from books, movies, or TV shows. Most convention goers arrive in cosplay and spend the day in character. Two fans arrived dressed as characters from the Illuminae series.

Illuminae is told through a dossier of emails, documents, and diagrams and follows the story of Kady and Ezra, who thought their break up was the worst thing they would have to face. Then, all hell broke lose. Their planet was invaded and they had to evacuate immediately, getting on separate space ships and fleeing to safety. Over the course of the book, Kady and Eza must determine the cause of a terrible plague, whether the ship’s AI can be trusted, and what is truly going on, even though they swore to never speak again.

Celeste was Illuminae’s Kady, accompanied by AIDAN, the ship Hypatia’s murderous AI.

The second book in the series is Gemina. Gemina is also told through a dossier of classified information. In the novel, Hanna is the spoiled captain’s daughter, and Nik is a member of a notorious crime family. Jump Station Heimdall was not spared from the BeiTech invasion and the doom of the Alexander. Alien predators are picking off the ship’s residents, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole could mean the end of the entire universe.

Warner Brothers and Plan B productions plan to produce a movie version of Illuminae. The rest of the production crew and the casting has not yet been announced.

Illuminae is available now. Gemina releases on October 18. For more on the series, you can visit Amie Kaufman’s website or Jay Kristoff’s website .
