The Tonight Show’s Summer Reads book club picked Children of Blood and Bone as their first title.

In Tomi Adeyemi’s West African-inspired fantasy novel, Zélie’s world is full of magic. White haired maji conjure flames, summon spirits, and control the waves. Under the orders of a ruthless king, the maji are killed, the magic is gone, and Zélie’s mother is murdered. With the help of a rebel princess, Zélie must outrun and outsmart the crown prince in order to save her world and bring her magic back.

“Summer’s here and I don’t really have books to read. I don’t have a good summer book to read,” said Fallon said on his June 22nd show. “I haven’t been in a book club since Oprah”.

The segment marks an entirely new portion of The Tonight Show.

The Tonight Show will partner with publisher Macmillan to donate 3,000 copies of Children of Blood and Bone through First Book, which provides literature for schools and community programs nationwide.

Other nominations for the Summer Reads club included Providence by Caroline Kepnes, The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin, The Good Son by You-Jeong Jeong, and IQ by Joe Ide.
