We love celebrating new books and new covers, especially from old friends. Eric Smith – who stopped by the site last year to chat about his novel Inked – is back to share the cover of its sequel Branded!

In Inked, tattoos once were an act of rebellion. Now they decide your destiny the moment the magical Ink settles under your skin. Caenum can’t escape soon enough. He is ready to run from his family, and his best friend Dreya, and the home he has known, just to have a chance at a choice. But on his eighteenth birthday, he unwittingly sets in motion a series of events that sends the corrupt, magic-fearing government, The Citadel, after him and those he loves.

Fans of Inked will meet new characters and visit new places that Smith “can’t wait to take them” in Branded.

branded eric smith“Hm, what can I say about book two without giving anything away? It picks up a little bit after the events of the end of book one, and Caenum, the once-sheltered-teen-turned-rebel finds himself leading a full on rebellion, and the relationships around him are crumbling apart. The entire realm is caught up in the war him and his friends started, and as the final battle gets close, he has some major decisions to make. Is this fight one he really wants? Can he save those closest to him?”

Branded releases on September 6 from Bloomsbury Spark.

Smith is thrilled with the cover.

“The designer behind it, Jenny Zemanek, worked on the cover to the first book, and has worked on a lot of fabulous YA and Middle Grade titles. Check out her site, Seedlings Design, when you get a chance. She’s worked on a bundle of Bloomsbury Spark books, by authors I love like Ashley Poston (The Sound of Us), Jenny Kaczorowski (The Trick to Landing), and Laura Lee Anderson (Song of Summer). And Michelle Smith’s wonderful contemporary YA baseball books (please read Play On!).”

Smith, who hoped that the color of Branded‘s cover would be “radically different” from Inked for “entirely selfish I-want-to-hang-them-up-in-my-house-as-posters reasons,” was thrilled with the bright reds and purples and oranges of the cover.

“Fire might be a big deal in book two. Might be. Hint hint. Nudge. Etc.”
