SCBWI announces 2016 Crystal Kite Award winners


2016 crystal kite winner under a painted sky stacey leeThe Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) announced the winners of their 2016 Crystal Kite awards. The award honors great books from 15 different SCBWI regional divisions around the world. This year, two YA books took awards: Under A Painted Sky by Stacey Lee and Audacity by Melanie Crowder.

Under A Painted Sky won the Crystal Kite Award for California and Hawaii. In Under a Painted Sky, it is Missouri, 1849. Two girls forge a powerful bond as they travel disguised as boys, each searching for a link to their past, and struggling to avoid any unwanted attention law closes in on them.

Under A Painted Sky is available now.

Audacity won the Crystal Kite Award for the Southwest region: Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. Audacity is a verse novel inspired by the real-life story of Clara Lemlich, a spirited young woman who emigrated from Russia to New York at the turn of the twentieth century and fought tenaciously for equal rights.
